Freebie Friday: “Pacific Sound System: Volume One”

All right, so we can always use new music and isn’t it better when its free? We at The Ska Mission agree which is why, once a week, we’d like to provide you with linkage to free music! Keep in mind, some of these albums may have a “name your price,” setup, so we’d encourage you to at least throw a few bucks at em, but regardless, come one, come all and download some free tunes!

PACIFIC SOUND SYSTEM: VOLUME ONE

This compilation of tracks came out  in 2014 and features bands mostly from the Pacific Northwest/British Columbia, as it was put together by members of The Brass Action, a punk rockabilly sounding ska group from Vancouver. You definitely don’t get cheated as it features 26 of the most notable groups from the region, including Los Furios, Easy Big Fella, The Georgetown Orbits, Dope Soda, The Longshots, Wet City Rockers and more!

A few of my personal faves include:

Great, catchy singalong organ driven song from three of the members of Los Furios. Very full sound and great lyrical content!

The Godfathers of Seattle Ska and Moon Ska Vets, Easy Big Fella, added this awesome unreleased track.

Finally, one of the earliest recordings from Simple Minded Symphony, and while a bit raw, it definitely shows the awesome arrangements and songwriting they’ve continued to build on as well as the potential for where they are taking their music.

So, check out this great free comp available HERE (web site: pacificsoundsystem.bandcamp.com/album/pacific-sound-system) and stay tuned for next week’s edition.

Also, if you have free or name your price Ska related music that you would like considered for this feature, please email a link to your tunes to theskamission@gmail.com with “FREEBIE” in the subject line. ENJOY!

New Tune: Simple Minded Symphony “Mind Blind”

Hey, not missing a beat after a hard fought, strong finish in their attempt to get on Ska Mic Con, Simple Minded Symphony have just put out the first single as a precursor to the increased amount of recorded Ska goodness they have plan.

This tune has been available for a short time now, so if you haven’t heard it, get on it now and prepare for an EP that will release sometime in Mid-Early Fall and then the full length, “Horizons,” which will hit maybe around the end of 2017/beginning of 2018. So, check out “Mind Blind,” below:

If you wanna catch them live soon, they will be at:

(August 18th) MWR Customer Appreciation w/ Vertical Horizon (FREE)

(September 2nd) Oak Harbor Music Festival w/ Marc Broussard, Dirty Revival, The Paperboys and more!

(September 3rd) The Ska Mission Presents ALL SKA & NO WORK w/ The Kings, Rundown Kreeps, Echo Shot, Day Labor and Landrace!

Coming up: March 13th – 19th

Hey, let’s see if I can keep y’all in the loop on a weekly basis! Here’s some quick updates on what shows we have this week, and any other news I see fit:

Seattle Shows

March 19th (Sunday)
Tractor Tavern (Fremont) 21+
SOLD OUT
Save Ferris
Vista Kicks
It Gets Worse

That’s right, Monique Powell and her gang are hitting up the Tractor Tavern, but if you want tickets, you’re going to have stubhub it or find a guest spot, cuz this shindig is sold out. Pity, because local third wave heroes, It Gets Worse will be opening up the show! However, if you’re dying to here SPAM live, I suggest you leave work early and head down south to Portland, cuz they still got tickets for the Friday night Show!

Portland Shows

 March 17th (Friday)
The Hawthorne Theater (Portland) 21+
Save Ferris
The Bandulus
Vista Point

After that Ten Things I Hate About You Band, (or should we give Letters to Cleo that moniker?) hits the Emerald City, they travel to the Land O’ Ports to sing you some Dexy’s Midnight Riders. Good news is that there are still tickets and at $16, I’d say thats worth it just to catch The Bandulus live, because that group is FIRE and then some. So get over there on Friday to start the weekend off proper!
